Comet P/2020 X1 (ATLAS) (astro.vanbuitenen.nl)

Discovery:

This comet was discovered in the course of the "Asteroid Terrestrial-Impact Last Alert System" (ATLAS) search program on CCD-images taken on 2020 dec. 4.45 UT with the 0.5-m f/2 Schmidt reflector at Haleakala, Hawaii.  A. Fitzsimmons discribed the comet with a compact coma of 7" in size with extension of 6" towards 220 degrees.  It appears that previous single night observations have been reported  to the Minor Planet Center and posted in the MPC's "isolated tracklet file"  [ CBET 4895 ]

MPEC X71: COMET P/2020 X1 (ATLAS)

     A. Fitzsimmons reports the discovery of a comet in four 30-second exposures obtained ATLAS-HKO survey (T05) on Dec. 4 UT.  He reports a condensed 10" coma extending 6 arcsec towards position angle 220 deg.

Several  prediscovery positions were subsequently reported from Dec. 2020.
